Exposed: How Ghana blew over GH₵83 million on appearance fees in only 3 World Cup matches

A new report has revealed that Ghana spent a staggering $5.4 million during just three matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The revelation has sparked outrage, drawing comparisons to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, where the country’s early exit was overshadowed by allegations of financial mismanagement.

According to the report, part of this massive expenditure included a $20,000 payment to coach Otto Addo’s personal assistant, while the Ministry’s purse holder received $10,000.

Even more shocking, 54 individuals including the 26-man playing squad, were each handed a whopping $100,000 for their participation.

However, the identities of the remaining 28 beneficiaries remain undisclosed, raising serious questions about accountability.

Renowned sports journalist Fentuo Tahiru Fentuo shared the breakdown on his X (formerly Twitter) account, questioning how such a budget was approved.

“You prepare this kind of budget and when the backlash comes, you release a statement saying the ministry, not the FA, spent the money. Who asked for that amount to be spent? Ridiculous,” he wrote.

So far, no official from the Ghana Football Association or the Sports Ministry has responded to the claims.

The timing of this revelation is even more significant, coming just days after former President John Dramani Mahama called for greater transparency in national team spending.

With public scrutiny intensifying, many are demanding answers. Who approved these payments, and where exactly did the money go?
