Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has sparked debate by naming Chelsea legend Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian footballer to ever play in the Premier League.
Essien, who made history as the first Ghanaian to win the English top-flight title, remains one of the most decorated African players in England.
While other Ghanaian stars like Tony Yeboah, Sulley Muntari, Andre Ayew, and Jordan Ayew have all left their mark, Semenyo believes none reached the heights Essien did.
Semenyo’s Ultimate Pick
Speaking to BR Football, the Bournemouth forward was asked to name the greatest Ghanaian player in Premier League history. His response was clear:
“[It] has to be Michael Essien. I want to say Asamoah Gyan just for what he did at Sunderland, but yeah, Michael Essien, he’s the GOAT.”
Essien’s time at Chelsea was nothing short of legendary. The midfield powerhouse played 168 Premier League games, scoring 17 goals and providing 10 assists.
He was a key figure in Chelsea’s dominance, helping them secure two Premier League titles in 2006 and 2010, cementing his status as one of Ghana’s finest exports.

Semenyo’s Impressive Season
Meanwhile, Semenyo himself has been in top form for Bournemouth this season. The forward has featured in 26 matches, scoring 7 goals and providing 4 assists.
With the season still ongoing, he’ll be looking to add to his tally and carry that momentum into Ghana’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar.
After missing out on AFCON 2025, the Black Stars are determined to secure their place on the world stage, and Semenyo will be hoping to play a major role in their qualification campaign.
