Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi has called out Enzo Fernandez, urging the Argentine midfielder to elevate his performance in the upcoming 2024/25 season.
In a recent episode of his “Obi One” podcast, Mikel suggested that Chelsea functioned more efficiently without the World Cup winner last season.
Fernandez, who joined Chelsea in the winter transfer window of 2023 for a then British record fee of £106.3 million, has shown only glimpses of the brilliance that warranted such a hefty price tag.
This has frustrated Mikel, who now demands better performances from the 23-year-old former River Plate star.
Previewing Chelsea’s season on his podcast, Mikel shared his thoughts on Fernandez’s impact.
The former Chelsea midfielder noted that the team found better balance when Enzo was not in the lineup, particularly under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino managed to create a more effective team dynamic with Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher in midfield.
“When Conor Gallagher played with Moises Caicedo towards the end of last season, the team played better without Enzo Fernandez,” Mikel said. “Enzo needs a big season; we can’t keep making excuses for him.”
Mikel emphasized that Fernandez has had enough time to settle in and now needs to demonstrate the quality that Chelsea paid for.
In addition to his comments on Fernandez, Mikel has been working tirelessly behind the scenes to convince Chelsea to sign Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen from Napoli.
His efforts have been well-received by Nigerian fans, who have praised Mikel for his dedication to strengthening his former club.
As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Enzo Fernandez to see if he can rise to the challenge set by Mikel and prove his worth at Chelsea.
