Augustine Eguavoen Gives Reasons Why He Stepped Down After Just 2 Matches For The Super Eagles

Augustine Eguavoen has stepped down from his role as the head coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles after guiding the team through two important 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The former national team player led the Super Eagles to a 3-0 win against Benin Republic and a goalless draw with Rwanda, fulfilling his temporary mandate.

Eguavoen’s Short Spell as Super Eagles Coach

Eguavoen, who is also the NFF’s technical director, was brought in to handle the Super Eagles for two matches after Bruno Labbadia turned down an offer to coach the team.

In his fourth stint as head coach, Eguavoen got the job done, securing four points from the two games.

In the first match, Nigeria dominated Benin Republic, winning 3-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

This was followed by a hard-fought 0-0 draw in Kigali against Rwanda at the Amahoro Stadium, ensuring the Super Eagles stayed on track in their AFCON qualification campaign.

Eguavoen Explains His Decision to Step Down

After completing his two-match assignment, Eguavoen revealed his decision to step aside in an interview with OwnGoal Nigeria. He thanked the players and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for their support, while also explaining that his role was always meant to be temporary.

“I have been given a mandate to handle two games. I am very pleased with the boys, and again, thanks to the NFF leadership. The boys supported me in terms of discipline and working hard,” Eguavoen said.

He further stated that his task ended with the two games and that while there might be discussions about future fixtures, he hasn’t been informed about further plans.

He added, “I can give inside information to whoever takes over to ensure the team is well-prepared for the next challenge.”

Who Will Be Nigeria’s Next Coach?

Reports suggest that Swedish coach Janne Andersson is in talks with the NFF and could take over the Super Eagles by the end of September.

Eguavoen’s departure leaves the door open for Andersson, or another coach, to step in as Nigeria prepares for future challenges, including a potential clash with Libya.

Nigerian fans also had their say during the recent match against Rwanda, expressing their disappointment after Ademola Lookman’s goal was disallowed.

Many felt the decision was harsh, claiming that the Egyptian referee made a poor call, which could have changed the game’s outcome.

As the Super Eagles look ahead, one thing is clear: Eguavoen leaves the team in a strong position with their AFCON qualification hopes intact.
