Tensions flared at Bayer Leverkusen as Victor Boniface and Emiliano Buendia found themselves in a fiery on-field clash during their side’s dominant 4-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
The Nigerian striker, who has been struggling for game time, came on in the 77th minute and saw a golden chance to score in stoppage time.
However, things got heated when Buendia unintentionally blocked his follow-up attempt after a defensive scramble in the box.
Frustrated, Boniface confronted the Argentine, pointing fingers and even pushing him before teammates, including Nordi Mukiele, stepped in to diffuse the situation.
Frustration Boiling Over?
Boniface’s emotions were understandable. The Super Eagles star has been on the bench for three consecutive games and played just 20 minutes across the last three matches.
With competition from Patrick Schick, who has netted 22 goals this season, Boniface has found himself sidelined more often than he’d like.
Xabi Alonso Addresses the Incident
After the match, head coach Xabi Alonso played down the altercation, insisting it wasn’t a major issue.
“I spoke with Boni. He wanted to shoot, it happens. We don’t want to make a big deal out of something small. We’re staying calm, and on Monday, we move forward,” Alonso said in his post-match press conference.
What’s Next for Boniface?
Despite the tension, Boniface remains a key attacking option for Leverkusen, with 10 goals to his name this season.
As the Bundesliga leaders prepare for their crucial Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, the Nigerian forward will be eager to prove himself and reclaim his spot in the starting lineup.
