Paris Saint-Germain forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has emphasized his team’s determination to turn the tide in their Champions League Round of 16 second leg against Liverpool.
After a narrow 1-0 defeat in the first leg, the French champions are focused on making a statement at Anfield, where they must produce a strong performance to keep their European dream alive.
A Frustrating First Leg for PSG
Despite controlling possession and creating several clear-cut chances in the first leg, PSG found themselves on the losing side due to a late goal from Harvey Elliott.
The Parisians registered 28 shots on goal, forcing Liverpool’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker into making nine crucial saves, yet they failed to find the net.
Reflecting on the game, Kvaratskhelia admitted that football was “unfair” to PSG, acknowledging their disappointment with the result. However, he remained confident that the team can correct their mistakes in the second leg, saying:
“We were disappointed, but the next day we watched the replay and realized we have to play the same way again. If we do that, we will get our reward.”
The Challenge of Anfield
Playing at Anfield is never an easy task, especially in the Champions League. Liverpool has built a reputation for staging dramatic European nights, with famous comebacks against teams like Barcelona in 2019 and Borussia Dortmund in 2016.
PSG will need to be at their best to break down a well-organized Arne Slot side that rarely loses at home in this competition.
Kvaratskhelia acknowledged the challenge ahead but remained optimistic:
“Here at Anfield, it will be more difficult, but everything is possible. We have to play our game, be confident, and show them that we are here to win.”
PSG’s Game Plan for the Second Leg
With Luis Enrique at the dagout, PSG is expected to stick to their attacking philosophy. They will rely on the creativity of Ousmane Dembélé, and the intelligence of Vitinha in midfield to break Liverpool’s defense. Kvaratskhelia, who has adapted well since his arrival from Napoli, will also play a key role in stretching Liverpool’s backline and creating goal-scoring opportunities.
The Georgian international stressed that while he enjoys playing beautiful football, the most important thing is securing a victory:
“Our mentality is to win. For me, it’s important to play beautifully, but even more important that we score goals and win games.”
Can PSG Pull Off a Famous Comeback?
PSG has faced similar challenges in the past but has struggled to complete major Champions League comebacks. They will take inspiration from their historic 4-1 victory over Barcelona in 2021, which saw them dominate at the Camp Nou. However, they will also be wary of past failures, such as their infamous 6-1 collapse against Barcelona in 2017 after winning the first leg 4-0.
If PSG can remain disciplined defensively and capitalize on their chances, they have the quality to trouble Liverpool and turn the tie in their favor.
All eyes will be on Anfield as PSG aims to prove they belong among Europe’s elite. Whether they can overcome the one-goal deficit and secure a famous victory remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—they are ready to fight for this dream.
