Former Black Stars coach Akwasi Appiah believes Ghana has yet to find a true replacement for Asamoah Gyan, whose absence has left a major void in the national team’s attack.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, was a key figure for the Black Stars for over a decade, delivering crucial goals in multiple tournaments. However, since his retirement, no striker has fully stepped up to fill his shoes.
Speaking in an interview with Flashscore, Akwasi Appiah admitted that replacing Gyan is no easy task.
“It’s very tough to replace someone of his calibre and quality. A striker like that doesn’t come around often,” Appiah said.
He acknowledged that players like Mohammed Kudus and Antoine Semenyo have shown potential, but they need to develop consistency to reach Gyan’s level.
“Right now, we have players like Kudus and potentially Semenyo, who are doing well for their clubs. Hopefully, they can maintain that level of consistency for Ghana and lead the team to glory, just like Asamoah Gyan did.”
Ghana’s Struggle for a Reliable Striker
Since Gyan’s retirement, the Black Stars have struggled to find a clinical finisher capable of delivering in big games.
The team’s lack of a prolific goal-scorer has been evident in recent tournaments, raising concerns among fans and football experts.
Appiah, who led Ghana to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, emphasized that leadership and team cohesion will be crucial for the national team’s future success.
Jordan Ayew to Be Named Black Stars Captain?
Meanwhile, reports suggest that Jordan Ayew is set to be named Black Stars captain, taking over from Thomas Partey.
Ayew, who has been one of Ghana’s most consistent players in recent years, is expected to lead the team alongside Alexander Djiku, who will serve as vice-captain.
Additionally, Mohammed Kudus has reportedly chosen to give up the number 10 jersey, which was assigned to him by former coach Otto Addo, while Thomas Partey has declined the role of deputy captain.
With a leadership reshuffle on the horizon, Ghana continues its search for a new talisman to step up and lead the national team to success, just as Asamoah Gyan did for many years.
