“I don’t play for statistics, I play for people to enjoy football.”- Lamine Yamal

"I don't play for statistics, I play for people to enjoy football."- Lamine Yamal

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal gave an interview to UEFA, making it clear that he doesn’t focus on statistics. “I play to enjoy myself, to make people enjoy the game, and to win,” said the Spanish international, who once again addressed comparisons with Lionel Messi

Yamal dismissed any thoughts of comparing himself to others, insisting that his main focus is on his own growth. “I don’t think about whether I have more or less than another player.

The key is to focus on yourself, do your best for the team, and keep improving. I don’t pay much attention to stats. I play for enjoyment, for the fans, and, of course, to win.”

The 17-year-old also reflected on how his experience at the last European Championship changed him as a footballer.

“Before, I felt like a kid, but winning the European Championship changed everything. Now, I have more confidence, and I don’t feel like a kid anymore. Winning a title helps every player take a step forward, and you can see the difference.”

That confidence has carried over into his performances for Barcelona. “Now I take on more responsibilities and try things I wouldn’t have before.

In the past, I played more freely, just doing what I felt in the moment. Now, I still enjoy myself, but I try to inspire myself and push my limits.”

Yamal also had high praise for Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, calling him “a very nice person, easy to talk to.” He added, “He always checks on us, teaches us a lot, and earns respect both as a coach and a person. He’s strict but also understands what each player needs at the right time.”

The young star revealed that Flick focuses on his defensive duties but gives him freedom in attack. “He asks certain things of me when defending, but in attack, he just tells me to enjoy myself. That kind of trust gives us confidence.”
