Ghana Black Stars striker, Brandon Thomas-Asante, has revealed that he tries to emulate Brazilian legend Ronaldinho whenever he plays. Inspired by the former Barcelona star’s talent and unique style, Thomas-Asante said Ronaldinho’s approach to the game had a lasting impact on him as a young footballer.
In an interview with EFL’s My Football Icon show, the Coventry City forward shared how watching Ronaldinho helped shape his passion for football. He was particularly moved by Ronaldinho’s infectious smile and love for the game, which made football look joyful and effortless.
“He had an impact on my career because I try to copy him. When you start playing football, you see him doing something amazing, and you want to try it yourself,” Thomas-Asante said. “Growing up, people would see me dribbling with a football wherever I went, and I think that came from watching players like him who were always in the spotlight.”
For Thomas-Asante, what made Ronaldinho special was how he always seemed to be in control and never stopped enjoying the game. The 2005 Ballon d’Or winner’s ability to entertain fans with his skill while maintaining a positive attitude made him a true icon.
“He inspired not just one generation, but even today people still call him one of the most skillful players in football,” the Ghanaian striker added.
Brandon Thomas-Asante Earns Third Call-up for Black Stars
Thomas-Asante has been called up to the Black Stars squad for a third time, ahead of the crucial 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Sudan. The 25-year-old forward will join the national team for the double-header clash on October 10 and October 15, 2024.
He first earned a spot in the Black Stars squad in May during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and Central African Republic, following an impressive season with West Bromwich Albion, where he scored 12 goals and provided two assists in the Championship. His second call-up came last month for the AFCON qualifying matches against Angola and Niger.
So far, Thomas-Asante has made two appearances for the senior national team, and he will be looking to add more in the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.
