Otto Addo, a former Ghanaian international, has made a significant move in his coaching career by returning to the Black Stars on a full-time basis.

After successfully guiding Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team faced tough opponents like Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea, Addo has now taken on the role permanently.

This marks a new chapter in his journey, as he looks to build a team capable of competing for top honors.

Previously, the Black Stars were under the management of Chris Hughton, but his unsuccessful campaign during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations led to Addo’s return.

With a long-term contract now in place, Addo is set to lead the team through future challenges, including the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

In an interview with FIFA, Addo shared his thoughts on the decision to rejoin the Black Stars.

“The first time I came I got a release from Borussia Dortmund [where I worked as a talent coach] to join for six months, but under the commitment that I had to come back,” he explained.

Addo, who played for Dortmund for six years and coached there for five, emphasized the importance of maintaining his relationship with the German club.

However, when Ghana expressed interest in having him join on a regular basis, the discussion took a different turn.

With his contract at Dortmund ending in 2025, Addo felt it was the right time to take the next step in his career.

“I was very, very happy that [the Sporting Director] Sebastian Kehl allowed me to leave the club and that they could understand my readiness to develop myself and to go to the next step as a head coach,” he added.

Since taking over, Addo’s impact has been positive, with the Black Stars securing back-to-back wins against Mali and the Central African Republic in June.

These victories have boosted Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, providing a strong start to Addo’s second stint with the team.

As the Black Stars prepare to return to action in September for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, fans and players alike are hopeful that Addo’s leadership will steer the team toward success.

With matches against Angola and Niger on the horizon, Ghanaian football is set to embark on an exciting journey under Otto Addo’s guidance.
