Dutch defender Jeremie Frimpong has opened up about the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) attempt to recruit him to represent the Black Stars.
The 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen wing-back was one of several players the GFA approached to bolster Ghana’s national team.
However, Frimpong ultimately opted to play for the Netherlands, citing their early belief in his potential as a decisive factor.
“I considered playing for Ghana, and the Ghana Football Association did make contact with me,” Frimpong revealed in an interview with 3Sports. “But Holland was always the first to come, and they were the country that believed in me.”
Frimpong has since become an integral part of the Dutch national team while continuing to shine at Bayer Leverkusen, where he has scored two goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances this season.
A Heartfelt Connection to Ghana
Despite his decision to represent the Netherlands, Frimpong maintains a strong connection to Ghana, where his roots lie.
During a recent visit to the country, he showcased his commitment to giving back by making a generous donation to the Osu Children’s Home in Accra.
Frimpong provided items worth over GH₵30,000, including Bayer Leverkusen jerseys for the children’s school football team.
Speaking to the media, he expressed his joy at being able to support the community.
“I’ve always wanted to do this, but I needed to be in the right position to provide,” he said. “Of course, I play football for my family, but now I can also help others.
This is what I want to do, especially in Africa. This is where I’m from; I have Ghanaian blood. Putting a smile on the faces of these kids is what it’s all about.”
