Manchester United fans have taken to social media to express their anger at Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva for a late challenge on Alejandro Garnacho during the Community Shield match at Wembley.
The incident has sparked a heated debate, with many United supporters accusing Silva of consistently making over-the-top challenges in matches against their club.
The Challenge on Garnacho
During the heated derby match, Silva made a strong challenge on Garnacho, who had already played the ball.
The Portuguese international appeared to have his focus solely on the player, sending the young Argentine to the ground with a forceful barge.
The incident did not go unnoticed by fans, who were quick to voice their disapproval online.
Fan Reactions
Manchester United supporters branded Silva’s actions as disgraceful, highlighting the challenge as unnecessary and overly aggressive.
Many pointed out that Silva, as a senior player, should set a better example, especially when facing a younger opponent like the 20-year-old Garnacho.
One fan posted, “Absolutely no need for that and also nothing to be proud of—he’s literally half his age.” Another added, “30-year-old man trying to hurt a kid, embarrassing behavior.”
Some fans were also frustrated with the lack of punishment from the referee, suggesting that Silva was lucky to avoid a red card. “No attempt to play the ball, just out to get the man. Should be a red card,” one fan commented.
Past Incidents
This is not the first time Silva has been called out for such challenges. Fans recalled a similar incident from the FA Cup Final between the two clubs in May, where Silva made an overly aggressive challenge on Jonny Evans, who was not even playing in the match.
In the video, Silva can be seen collecting a ball that had gone out of play and then turning into Evans, sending him flying. Although Silva apologized afterward, fans viewed it as another example of unnecessary aggression.
Mixed Opinions
While many criticized Silva, there were also some fans who praised his passion and enthusiasm. “Don’t mind a bit of feistiness. It shows that he got to you,” one fan wrote, while another added, “Love the passion from Bernardo. Absolutely beautiful.”
The contrasting views on Silva’s challenge have only added to the intensity of the rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City, as fans continue to debate what constitutes fair play and over-the-top aggression.
